Whether you have been dreaming about your wedding all your life or just started to envision your wedding day, one of the first and biggest considerations is to choose the look and feel. It’s not mandatory to have a theme, but the more specific your vision is, the easier it will be for vendors to translate your style and provide perfect ideas and details. The look and feel of your wedding will impact everything: your venue, invitations, wedding cake, wedding attire, flowers, food, reception tables, etc.
Some couples may already know their theme before they start planning; for others it’s not as easy. To start, I suggest thinking about colors, patterns, symbols and flowers that are meaningful. A beautiful floral painting or patterned pillow in your home may the basis of your wedding theme. Other themes stem from the wedding city/location, season or favorite hobby. Creative couples have also chosen books, plays, songs, poems, etc.
For our DC Ladies Wedding Styled Shoot, we wanted to show ideas for a fall wedding in Washington, DC. We started with our venue, the Carnegie Library, chosen for its beautiful architecture, central location and stunning interior spaces to host a wedding. We wanted to provide dramatic wedding inspiration with bold colors and prints, which is precisely how our Kate Spade in DC theme evolved. In the end our wedding look is whimsical, feminine, modern and dramatic.
One of my favorite parts of designing a wedding is the reception tables, which are central to the look and feel of your party. I think about dressing the table as I do dressing myself, with combining colors and patterns that are complimentary. The linen and place settings are the basis for the look, the floral décor are the accessories. To create a bold table, don’t be afraid to step outside the box with different colors and textures. Play with patterns and mix and match pieces to create the final look.
We created two table designs for our DC Ladies Wedding Styled Shoot, a long reception table and a small round sweetheart table. Both had black and white patterned linen, gold chargers, gold rimmed wine and champagne glasses and black water goblets. We used red accents for our long reception table and pink for our sweetheart table. Long and low floral centerpieces were used to line the tables. This floral look is on trend and creates a beautiful tablescape.
When you are meeting with vendors, choose people who are excited about your vision and will help you carry out the details! We had a wonderful team of vendors who provided amazing services and details to carry out our theme, each vendor asked about the look and feel in order to add to our cohesive style. Our amazing wedding cake from Kendall’s Cakes, matched our bridal gown from Ellie’s Bridal Boutique perfectly. The brooch bridal bouquet and colorful bridesmaids bouquets created by Eight Tree Street complimented each gown and her floral centerpieces were the perfect accent to our ceremony and reception spaces. The Garter Girl provided a black and white garter for our Bride that worked with our theme and complimented the beautiful invitations from Tabibi Design. Our caterer, 550 Events provided a seasonal appropriate menu for our fall wedding and signature drink to match our colors. Huda’s Sweet Bee Bakery also provided a variety of desserts including cupcakes and cake pops to match our colors and theme. Thank you again to everyone involved – the full list is below.
